Aquí en España, a la gente le encanta una caña; una cervecita pequeña y fresca para disfrutar a cualquier hora, ¡siempre se necesita una cerveza! No es raro ver a la gente tomando estas cervezas pequeñas durante el día, pero, a diferencia de Irlanda, aquí la cerveza casi siempre está acompañada de algo para picar: aceitunas, una tapa o dos, o quizás un bocadillo de jamón. Y acá en Cataluña, una opción omnipresente son las patatas fritas gruesas al estilo churrería, acompañadas con salsa Espinaler.

Solas, las patatas no tienen tanto sabor (especialmente en comparación con Irlanda, ¡donde tenemos los mejores sabores del mundo!). Por eso, a menudo las sirven con una botellita de salsa roja. ¡Gira la botella y échales la salsa por encima de tus chips! La describiría como una salsa ácida y ligeramente aguada, parecida a una salsa de tomate, con un toque de salsa Worcestershire. ¡La acompañante perfecta para una cerveza bien merecida!

¡Ahora ya tienes una buena excusa para ir a tomarte esa caña que ya tocaba!

In Spain, people here love a caña; a small, crisp glass of draught beer, to be consumed at whatever time a beer is needed! It’s not unusual to see people sipping these small beers during the day, but unlike in Ireland, the beer is almost always consumed alongside some sort of snack: olives, a tapa or two, or maybe even a jamón sandwich. But a pretty ubiquitous option here in Catalonia are the thick ‘churrería style’ potato chips with the savoury ‘salsa de Espinaler’.

The potato chips on their own are pretty flavourless (especially coming from Ireland where our crisp flavours are the best around) so they’ll often be accompanied by a tiny bottle red sauce. Give it a good shake and slather it over your xips! I’d describe it as a slightly tangy, watery tomato sauce, with a kind of Worcestershire sauce kick to it. The perfect accompaniment to that well earned beer!

Now you’ve got a nice excuse to go have that long overdue caña!
