Ever wondered what Christmas is like in different parts of the world? Here are some of my favourite traditions from Catalonia and Spain…

✨Caga Tío✨

¡Caga Tío! Este tronco es una tradición peculiar que se vive en todos los rincones de Cataluña durante la Navidad. Este video creo que aclara el concepto de manera más efectiva de lo que yo podría hacerlo. En resumen, este tronco de madera se alimenta en los días previos a la festividad, y en Nochebuena, los niños reciben palitos para golpear el tronco al ritmo de la canción de “Caga Tío”. Todo culmina cuando el tronco “caga” dulces y regalos.… te lo digo en serio, ni cagando 😂

Uncle poop! This little log is everywhere at Christmas time in Cataluña. It’s a tradition so bizarre that I think this video explains it better than I ever could! Long story short, in the run up to Christmas, the log gets ‘fed’ and then on Christmas, kids are given sticks to beat the log, while singing the Caga Tío song, until it poops sweets and gifts… I shit you not 😂

✨El Caganer✨

¿Mencioné que a los catalanes les obsesiona el tema del excremento? El ‘caganer’ es una figurita de un hombre defecando que los catalanes incluyen en su belén para simbolizar fertilizar la tierra y buena suerte para el próximo año, todo con una buena dosis de humor. Tradicionalmente, la figura viste un traje típico catalán, pero hoy en día puedes encontrar figuritas de tus celebridades favoritas “bajándose los pantalones” para agregar a tu propio belén navideño. 🙈

Did I mention the Catalans have an obsession with poop?! The ‘caganer’ is a figurine of a man pooping that Catalans include in their nativity scene to symbolise fertility & good luck for the year ahead, all with a good dose of humour. Traditionally, the figure is dressed in a typical Catalan traditional dress but nowadays you can find figurines of all your favourite celebs ‘dropping trou’ to add to your own Christmas crib 🙈

✨Turrón✨

El turrón es un querido dulce tradicional de Navidad en España, especialmente en Cataluña. Esta golosina de turrón se ha convertido en un elemento básico durante las festividades, y encontrarás filas y filas de diferentes sabores y texturas en las tiendas en esta época del año. Está hecho con almendras u otros frutos secos, miel y azúcar, y tiene diversas variedades, desde el clásico estilo duro de Alicante hasta el más suave estilo Jijona. Personalmente, me gusta el tipo que te hace romper los dientes 😂

Turrón is a cherished traditional Christmas sweet in Spain, particularly in Catalonia. This nougat treat is a staple during festive seasons and you’ll find rows and rows of different flavours and textures in the shops at this time of year. It is made from almonds or other nuts, honey, and sugar, comes in various varieties, ranging from the classic hard Alicante style to the softer Jijona style. Personally, I like the kind that breaks your teeth 😂

✨Pan Dulce✨

En esta época del año, por todas partes en España se encuentra este pastel de Navidad italiano. Me evoca una combinación entre un ‘hot cross bun’ y un tradicional ‘barmbrack’ irlandés. ¡Perfecto con una copa de cava!

This Italian Christmas cake ‘Pannetone’ is everywhere in Spain at this time of year. It kind of reminds me of a mix of a hot cross bun and Irish traditional barmbrack. Perfect with a glass of cava!

✨Los Reyes Magos✨

Para los niños, los Reyes Magos son tan importantes como Papá Noel aquí en Cataluña. Hay grandes desfiles el 5 de enero con los Reyes llegando a la ciudad y el 6 de enero, si dejas tus zapatos afuera, los Reyes Magos visitarán tu hogar y te dejarán regalos. ¡No olvides dejar zanahorias y pasto para alimentar a los camellos!

For kids, the Three Kings are as important as Santa here in Catalonia. There are big parades in the 5th of January with the kings arriving to town and the on the 6th of January, if you leave your shoes out, the kings or the 3 wise men will visit your home and leave you gifts! Don’t forget to leave some carrots and grass to feed the camels!
